Government owned lands: The facts

1. The U.S. Government now owns and manages 29% of the land base of the United States. The land base is 2.3 billion acres. The U.S. government owns and manages 657 million acres.
2. This land is equivalent to the area of the states from Maine to Florida - Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida - multiplied 2 and one-half times. 
3. Four agencies administer 626 million of those acres - 95% of the total.
A. The U. S. Forest Service - 191 million acres or 298,427 square miles. (29% of the total). 
B. The Bureau of Land Management - 263 million acres or 410,280 square miles. (40% of the total)
C. The Fish and Wildlife Service - 92 million acres or 143,520 square miles. (14% of the total)
D. The National Park Service - 80 million acres or 124,800 square miles. (12% of the total)
